On the last day of Imperial's week, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh arrived by helicopter, put on a hard hat, boots and a high vis jacket to spend an hour with the students. Although Prince Philip had been involved in celebrations for the Queen's official birthday and his own earlier 85th birthday, he showed no sign of tiredness and impressed all the students with his high level of interest and probing questions.

The Duke, as Senior Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), on learning about the initiative was impressed and asked to see for himself how students experience first-hand the practicalities of running and working on a construction project.

Third year undergraduate Oliver Broadbent, leader on the East Reef pier project, described the scheme as being at the cutting edge of student teaching. “For the students I think this is the highlight of their four years at Imperial College, and the Duke's visit showed the importance of the project and how privileged they were to be doing it”, he said.

Gemma Rees, said of meeting the Prince: "He was genuinely interested and really seemed to want to see how we'd got on and what we had achieved. It's important to us that he came because it shows the significance of what we are doing here.
